In 1994 an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. In the midst of utter devastation and chaos, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: "No matter what, I ll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.
He began to direct his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.
As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, clutching their hearts, saying: "My son!" "My daughter!" Other well meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: "It s too late! They re all dead! You can t help!
Go home! Come on, face reality, there s nothing you can do!"
To each parent he responded with one line: "Are you going to help me now?" And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the school s ruins saying, "Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You re in danger. We ll take care of it. Go home." To which this loving, caring American father asked, "Are you going to help me now?"
The police came and said, "You re angry, anxious and it s over. You re endangering others. Go home. We ll handle it!" To which he replied, "Are you going to help me now?" No one helped.
Courageously he went on alone because he needed to know for himself: "Is my boy alive or is he dead?" He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son s voice. He screamed his son s name, "ARMAND!" He heard back, "Dad!?! It s me, Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told em that if you were alive, you d save me and when you saved me, they d be saved. You promised, No matter what happens, I ll always be there for you! You did it, Dad!" "What s going on in there? How is it?" the father asked.
"There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. We re scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you re here. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle, and it saved us."

American is a language sepearte from english

On this therd there is some disscussion of American being it's seperte language form English on this therd.I think that disscussion whould be getting more of topic if I posted anything more about it so I decide to create this theard.
Reasons why American should be sepreate form English (this in not in oder):
1)American and the British have differn't words:Have you ever herd a Briton say "Yo","Y'all"(It's a word in an officaly American dialic) or an American calling bathroom a "lou"(Can someone please explain why it's called a Lou in British english)?Probally not unless on some occusions but it's not apart of the everday vocbalry.
2)They both have diffent ways to use an insult:Britons when they insult [insert noun here] they say "bloody [insert noun here]"!Americans use more offensive words(Note:this is for much more severe occasions) (No I didn't type a word in and the censership is blocking it) [insert noun here]!
3)Patriotism:We fought a war for independence from Briton and we still speak there language?Our language should seperte just like the the country
4)English words that is from American Teenager,blizzard etc. are words form the united states which means that American is it's own langauge since it has it's own words
5)American words that aren't used anywhere elses: fall, the season; to quit are no longer used outside of the U.S. which means that American has it's own words.
Use of Singular and plural for nouns:In British English a briton would say "the team are worried" but in American eglish "The team is worred"
6)NumbersWhen saying or writing out numbers, the British will insert an "and" before the tens and units, as in "one hundred and sixty-two" and "two thousand and three", whereas Americans will typically drop the "and" as in "two thousand three"; however, "two thousand and three" is also common. The same rule applies when saying numbers in their thousands or millions: "four hundred and thirteen thousand" would be said by a British speaker, whereas the simpler "four hundred thirteen thousand" by an American speaker.(source:wikipedia)
Ok those are the reasons why it should a seperte langauge.Here are some chages I think should be made to American:
1)Spelling of "Donuts" should be chaged back to "Doughnuts"
2)We should make spell words differtntly to make it easier
3)Instead of saying "There 10 gourps of 3" we say "There are 3 x10 gourps"(similer to secientific notation)

A Coach and His Players

I was the new coach of a Little League baseball team and had not yet learned the names of my players. At our first game, I called each boy by the number on his uniform. When I yelled,"Number5, your time to bat, " Jeff Smith came to the plate to hit. When I called for "Number 7", Steve Heinz jumped up. Then I asked for "Number 1", and no one emerged from the dugout. Again I called for Number 1. Still no one.

As the umpire looked on, annoyed at this delay of the game, I shouted, "Who is Number 1?"

That's when the whole team yelled, "We are, Coach! We are!

A story

Matt and his wife lived in the country. Matt was very stingy and hated spending money. One day a fair came to the nearby town.
"Let's go to the fair, Matt," his wife said, "We haven't been anywhere for a long time."
Matt thought about this for a while. He knew he would have to spend money at the fair. At last he said, "All right, but I'm not going to spend much money. We'll look at things, but we won't buy anything."
They went to the fair and looked at all the things to buy. There were many things Matt's wife wanted to buy ,but he would not let her spend any money.
Then , in a nearby field, they saw a small airplane.
"Fun flight!" the notice said, "$10 for 10 minutes."
Matt had never been in an airplane and he wanted to go on a fun flight. However, he didn't want to have to pay for his wife, as well.
"I've only got $10," he told the pilot. "Can my wife come with me for free?" The pilot wasn't selling many tickets, so he said , "I'll make a bargain with you. If your wife doesn't scream or shout, she can have a free flight."
 Matt aGREed, and got into the small airplane with his wife.
 The pilot took off and made his airplane do all kinds of things. At one moment it was flying upside down.
 When the plane landed , the pilot said, "O.K. your wife didn't make a sound . She can have her ride free."
"Thank you," Matt said. "it wasn't easy for her, you know , especially when she fell out."

Every Day Has It's Dog

I don't know any other animal on this green earth that loves a barbecue more than a dog, and being one, I'm no exception. So, when my people say let's go , you know I'm gonna be there.

Well, this is a short story of one of those trips to meat Eden, and a pee-wee of a predicament. The first thing you have to understand is that I can't always control myself, I try, but all the food, all those smells, all the people, all the food, it just gets dogmatic after about 5 minutes. So, you can imagine what I have to endure after about an hour. I had to do it, I had to release all this pent up frustration somehow. But, how can I blow off some steam without further unwanted lambasting from my humans. This was becoming a doggie disaster and I had to bring this decision to a close. Then it dawned on me, why go out for a walk when you can go out with a bang. Uh, no, I didn't start banging some humans leg like you thought, that's degrading, and only perverted pets sink so low. What I did do though, is teach some humans not to mess with the pet world.
The people attending the food fest were standing around, laughing and having a good time, gorging their fat faces with the food of the gods, when all of a sudden the swilling was drowned out with a high pitch squealing that was an octave or two higher than a dog whistle. The humans scrambled for the source of the terror only to find one of their offspring crying at the top of his lungs. What happened, one of them yells. I think the dog did something, another whispers. Just then, the human child begins to yelp one phrase repeatedly, over and over again, burning into their ears with the words "It's Hot, It's Hot". Well, much to my surprise, the humans started laughing so hard they were dropping like flies. I didn't understand why they thought it was so funny, but the next time any other kid drops his hot-dog on the ground, and then picks it up and eats it without giving me any, I'm gonna pee on his leg too. After all, now I know I can get away with it.

'Dhoor! Tor bau naaki? Is he your wife that you treat him with such affection?' Deepak had chided Dilip. This was only a few months ago.

Dilip lived by himself in his small rented flat at Santoshpur. It was part of a larger bungalow where the owner had let out the lower rooms. Deepak was the owner's eldest son. He had a younger brother as well, Arko. Together, they would often visit Dilip for that evening tryst with the 'daughter of the vines', as they preferred to call the bottle of Royal Challenge whiskey.

Dilip lived alone ever since he moved from his ancestral house at Barrakpore, to be closer to his working place at Jadavpur in south Kolkata. On the insistence of his sisters he had finally employed a manservant to look after the house and his requirements. ' Afterall, there will be someone in the house to look after you' they had argued. Girish had been employed but left within two months due to his master's strange behavior with him.

Poor Dilip. Having never known the presence of a human soul in close proximity for most of his life, his concern over Girish had been over the top; he would not allowing Girish to cook two times a day, feel guilty if Girish cleaned and swabbed the rooms twice a day, serve him first at the table, then fill his own plate ' in fact Dilip had gone overboard calling for such remarks from Deepak as well - Is he your wife that you treat him with such affection? Girish had naturally fled.

' Then, get married. We are all getting older day by day. Who will look after you? ', his sisters insisted. Dilip was forty-five years. Clean shaven with a well kept moustache. His friends were in Barrakpur so he seemed to be friendless over here. Santoshpur was really like 'videsh' for him. Some said he was suffering from an inferiority complex since he was not married yet. Social stigma hounded him.

' You mean, in all these years he could not find even a single girl ready to marry him? Something must be missing, somewhere'!

The rumors were rife. Actually, Dilip did suffer from a complex ' the bald complex, a complex specially inflicted on Bengali men whose head deflect sunlight in a manner that can render an onlooker blind. But it was unavoidable as there was still a fine line of hair which he maintained like a flowerbed. The constant nagging from his sisters persisted until Dilip relented. No harm in looking he thought'..I may not marry'..at this age, which woman would'no harm in looking though. Eldest daughter of a government servant, first among six unmarried daughters; widow with two children; innocent divorcee; spinster in her early fifties ' No! Nothing seemed to appeal. Dilip ran his hand over his head, turned his lips downward and threw the newspaper on the floor. All rubbish! He was better off this way. Yet, no sooner had the next Sunday arrived, than he got busy with the matrimonial column again. Sunday after Sunday, it became in fact something to look forward to, something of an addiction too. Until one Sunday an ad caught his eye. One Lillimilly in her early forties was desirous to marry. She had a job in a PSU and lived in Lake Town. originally from Digha, she was on deputation for two years. Dilip's eyes lit up to think that this probably would be a good 'catch'. It was worth trying! He might in fact get lucky.

Letters passed between them. Even photographs. Dilip had worn a pea-cap to cover his bald head in the photograph. Last but not the least, when telephone numbers were exchanged, the meeting was fixed for the following Saturday. Dilip had sleepless nights. It was all hush-hush. Nobody in the family knew of his pursuits. He had been able to even keep those two from upstairs, Arko and Deepak, away from his story. However, what gave him the sleepless nights the most was the thought of how he was going to appear before the lady without a single hair on his head! A thought crossed his anxious mind and he dashed to Jimmy's Wigs at New Market. Jet-black crop of hair, darker than ever his eyebrows or his moustache fitted on his head. In fact, it even made him look younger than his age. However, there was a problem - everytime he wore his wig, his head boiled underneath. But there was no other solution. The best was to practice, practice, practice. Practice makes perfect, his father used to say.

On the appointed morning, Dilip arrived at Lillimilly's house. After the initial small talk, the topic went to family.

' I have two sisters, both married with children and no brothers' Dilip began. 'In fact I am the only son of my parents. My father was the then Head Master of Barrakpore Boy's School. A strict disciplinarian.'

' Oh!' Said Lillimilly, ' My grandfather was the then Principal of Bidhan Chandra College in Digha and in those days, he was known across Bengal as a great Academician. Even today, we are known as so-and-so's grand children'.'

' Really? My father was also very well known. In fact, Bidhan Ray, had many time invited him to'.'

' Oh, are you speaking of Dr Bidhan Ray?' Lilly interrupted, ' He used to frequent our house in Digha as well. He studied under my grandfather, you see'

Dilip wiped the sweat from his face. The conversation had not moved from the parents and grandparents level. At that very moment, a lady entered the room with a tray of water, sweetmeat and tea. The flavour of the tea filled the room.

' Meet Milly. We put the advertisement together '.

Dilip had just picked up his cup of tea. The words he heard pushed a question out of his lips.

' What exactly do you mean'?

' Milly and I wish to marry the same man. We therefore advertised together'.

Dilip choked over his tea. The cup shook in his hand and was precariously balancing between his fingers, when Milly came forward and took it away from Dilip's hands. ' Is something wrong?'

Dilip begun to cough. ' But the advertisement did not say that'.'

' It was a typing error. Instead of writing Lilly and Milly, they wrote Lillimilly'..'

Dilip was now close to fainting. He forgot where he was. He was sweating profusely. In fact so much so that the ladies thought he might be in the first stage of a heart attack. They turned the Usha fan at full speed thereby causing Dilip's wig to fly off his head and fall on the floor. The ladies stared in astonishment while Dilip rose and rushed out of the drawing room and out of the house. He was just about to board a waiting autorickshaw, when Lilly appeared at the gate '.

' You have forgotten something. ' she said

Dilip turned to see the wig in her hands'.

' Aamar matha!' He said slapping his forehead with his hand, ' My head!'

King Alfred and the Cakes

    King ALFRED O f England once led his army to fight with another army and was beaten. So he had to run away through the woods and swamps to save his life.

In a few minutes the woman came back and found the cakes burning. She was so angry that she struck the king with a stick and cried, “ You lazy fellow! You want to eat, but you do not want to work.”

Windsor's Full Story Told in New History Exhibitio

The Windsor Historical Society opened a new permanent exhibition titled "Windsor:  Bridging Centuries, Bridging Cultures" Tuesday night.  Showcasing 400 years of Windsor history, this display tells the stories of all the people who have made Windsor the unique place that it is.
"There was a great interest in personal Windsor stories," said exhibit coordinator and curator Erin Stevic. "Windsor's story is all about being in an important location," she said.
Windsor, located between what would become Springfield and Hartford, was settled on an essential waterway that provided a location for vital commerce. The two-gallery display leads visitors through the settling of Windsor, the vocations which were once found here, the importance of the Connecticut River and the transition to farming and industry.
The attendees at the exhibition's opening reception noticed the spacious arrangement of the displays. "We have created a space where classes can sit," said Stevic, who did a lot of the work for the exhibit from her new home in Ohio. "But, for me, the interactive parts of the exhibit are going to be great for students of all ages," she commented.
"This is a true Windsor history, not just the English men's history," said Christina Vida, Curator of Collections and Interpretation.  The display illuminates the Native Americans who were living on the land when the settlers came, the Irish immigrants who came later to work the land and the issue of slavery within Windsor's boundaries.
For Christine Ermenc, Executive Director, the grand opening of this new exhibit is a culmination of a massive amount of work on the parts of a handful of her employees. "There is a lot of responsibility to portray different points of view," she said, adding that after two brainstorming days she and her team had come up with 25 potential ideas for new exhibits. After surveying the community and narrowing it down to seven solid ideas, Ermenc said Stevic got to work, figuring out how to make a "complex story understandable."
"The new exhibit tells you not only what was here, but also what brought them here," said Stevic.
Some important sponsors for this exhibit include Windsor Federal Savings, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Connecticut Humanities Council and Rabbett Insurance Agency.
The Windsor Historical Society is located at 96 Palisado Avenue in Windsor. They are open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Goodbye Kiss

　　The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob starred to stand up and jostled the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. "How embarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age."

He looked at us and said," I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled the ocean."
　　Frank's voice dropped a bit." When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me good-bye!"
　　He paused and then went on," I remember the day I thought I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we got the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said,' No, Dad.' It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surprised looked on his face.
　　I said,' Dad, I'm too old for a good-bye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss.' My Dad looked at me for the longest tine, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked our the windshield.' You're right,' he said.' You are a big boy…… a man. I won't kiss you anymore.'"
　　For the moment, Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes. "It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back."
　　I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks. Frank spoke again." Guys, you don't know what I woud give to have my Dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek…… to feel his rough old face…… to smell the ocean on him…… to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would been a man, I would never have told my Dad I was too old for a good-bye kiss."
